Don't Say a Word

How do I play?

Players take turns adding one letter to either end of a shared fragment. Whoever completes a real word of the minimum length loses the round. Best of five rounds wins the match.

I lost, and I don't think that was a word.

Every match is refereed by the ENABLE word list, a public-domain dictionary of 172,823 English words. It's the same dictionary at every difficulty level, for both players. Difficulty changes only what the computer knows — never what counts as a valid word.

What does challenging do?

If you think no real word contains the current fragment, challenge your opponent. They have to name one. If they can't, they lose the round — but if they can, you do.

How do I unlock longer words and backgrounds?

Winning unlocks longer minimum word lengths and harder vocabulary as you go. Animated backgrounds unlock every five wins, up to twenty in total.

My online match seems stuck.

Online matches run through Game Center and are turn-based, so it stays your friend's move until they take it. If their clock runs out, they forfeit the round automatically.

If Game Center isn't signing in, check Settings › Game Center on your device, then reopen the app.

Did my progress disappear?

Progress is stored on your device, not on a server. Deleting the app clears it, and it doesn't transfer between devices.

Still stuck?

Send me a note. If you're reporting a bug, include your device and iOS version, and I'll get back to you.
